Nancy C. Lee, M.D.

Dr. Lee is currently a private consultant in Washington, D.C., with more than 30 years of experience in public health practice and policy. From 2011-2016, Dr. Lee was the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Women’s Health and Director of the Office on Women’s Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Her focus in that position included the Affordable Care Act, women’s preventive services, health across the lifespan, and violence against women.  

For most of her career, Dr. Lee was employed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where her efforts focused on cancer screening, epidemiology of reproductive system cancers, safety of contraceptive methods, and HIV infection among women. From 1999-2004, she was Director of the CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control—a division with more than 130 staff and an annual budget of $280 million.

Dr. Lee, has extensive experience in women’s reproductive health, surveillance systems, and cancer prevention and control, as well as has published over 100 articles in scientific journals. She has consulted with the Institute of Medicine, Food and Drug Administration, National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Black Women’s Health Imperative, CARE About Fibroids, The Agency for International Development, and World Health Organization. 

She received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin, graduating summa cum laude, and a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Baylor College of Medicine, graduating cum laude. Dr. Lee completed her residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and was board-certified in internal medicine (now inactive).
